The year 2008 marks the 200th birthday of Columbia, Tennessee. We commemorated this special occasion with a celebration held in downtown Columbia on the Public Square on July 26, 2008.

It was a fun-filled day with ample doses of history and honor for our citizens and guests.

Some of the highlights included entertainment by a variety of musicians including bluegrass and country, performances by local dance teams and choruses, and vendor booths featuring food, antiques and fine arts & crafts.

Participants spent a leisurely afternoon strolling around the public square where each quadrant featured a 50-year era of our bicentennial. They visited “The Birth of a City” – Pioneer Era, 1808 - 1850’s, “A Nation Divided” – Civil War Era, 1850’s - 1900, “A World at War” – World Wars I & II, 1900’s - 1940’s, or “Mom & Pop America” – Modern Era, 1950’s - 2008. Some of the participants and events in the different quadrants included a Civil War encampment, living history impersonators James K. Polk, Sam Watkins and Nathan Bedford Forrest, antique cars, motorcycles and tractors, cultural exhibits, historical displays, period clothing, and period appropriate dances and music.

In addition, artwork created by local students who participated in a poster/mural contest was displayed for public viewing. The prize was awarded to Santa Fe School.
